Executive Director
 

Solome Nakaweesi-Kimbugwe is a feminist activist, active participant and analyst within the feminist and women's movement in Africa and Internationally. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences majoring in Sociology from Makerere University , Uganda and a Masters Degree in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia , Norwich , United Kingdom .

She has previously worked with two advocacy organizations in Uganda : The Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC) at its Policy, Advocacy and Research Officer for 2 years as well as with Uganda Women's Network (UWONET) as the Advocacy Officer for 2 years. She rose through the ranks of her organisation to successfully head Uganda Women's Network as its Coordinator for four years. She has lectured in Development Studies at Makerere University and Nkumba University for a total of seven years. She is also an external examiner and research fellow for the Noragric University in Norway since 2004.

Presently, Solome is a member of: the Board of Directors of the Independent Media Council of Uganda; Treasurer of the Board of Transparency International Uganda Chapter; Founding Trustee and Advisor for the Women's Democracy Network based in Washington DC; a Steering Committee Member of Solidarity for African Women's Rights; Member of the Africa Democracy Forum

Her areas of speciality and interest are: policy analysis and advocacy, governance, women's political participation and leadership, coalition building, feminist movement building, networking and institutional development for women's organisations.

Solome was nominated as the Ugandan Professional Woman of the Year 2006 by the British Council Leadership Forum and in 2007, was documented by Women Direct as a Transformational Woman Leader in Eastern Africa .

Christine Butegwa is a feminist activist whose area of expertise is women's human rights, gender and development communication. Christine is an AWLI alumni (2003) and for her, the AWLI was responsible for her birth as a feminist. She has been part of and coordinated research, training and advocacy efforts around women's rights, media and communication policies at national, regional and international level.

Christine has immense skills in strategy development, advocacy, networking and capacity building around rights based approach to development. She has worked as an independent consultant with various institutions in civil society, government, private sector and donor agencies. She has also previously worked as Communications Officer with the African Women's Development and Communications Network (FEMNET), a pan-African membership organisation based in Nairobi , Kenya . Christine has also been a lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication at Makerere University .

Christine is currently the Regional Coordinator, Africa Programmes with Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA). She has a Masters degree in Communications Studies from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom . Christine has a passion for the creative arts including film, theatre and music.
